Break even. From a business perspective, this is what I hear over and over again about where I should aim to be at the end of my first year. Most people tell me that anything better than that would be a really great year, but it's unlikely and out of reach. If someone tells me something is out of reach, though, I reach for it.

At the very least, associates can cite to times when they consciously delivered an acceptable, but not exceptional, work product. In a moment of true confession, too many of us would acknowledge having handed in a pile of highlighted cases in response to a research assignment, or submitting a motion to a partner with the tag "early draft."
